Skipper is Barbie's little sister and was first introduced in 1964. She was the first of many family members for Barbie. Skipper was a child in early versions and was created in response to suggestions that Barbie should have children. Having a little sister gave Barbie opportunities to babysit instead.
Skipper's appearance has changed many times over the years and some of her body molds have been controversial. Although she was originally meant to represent an eight- or nine-year-old, later versions of Skipper had breasts and began to look older, eventually looking almost like Barbie herself. Current versions of Skipper look more like a young teenager.
