Pound Puppies & Pound Purries

Pound Puppies toy

Pound Puppies were first created in the early 1980s by Mike Bowling and have been produced by many different companies over the years. They featured flat, plush puppy dogs that were "shaped to be hugged" according to the description on the box.

Pound Puppies were packaged in a cardboard box shaped like a carrier kennel with their heads sticking out and holes in the box so children could pet them and feel their soft plush fur. Like Cabbage Patch Kids, they came with an adoption certificate.

Due to the popularity of Pound Puppies, a line of cats called Pound Purries (stylized as "Pound Pur-r-ries") soon followed.

Production of these toys continued off and on through the 1990s and 2000s. More animals were added to the line, including bunnies, pigs, and even ocean creatures. In 2019, Basic Fun began making reproductions of the original 1980s versions so today's children can enjoy the huggable fun of these classic toys.
